A 24-year-old man suspected of breaking into an Azusa home was killed in an officer-involved shooting Sunday.
No officers were injured in the shooting, which happened in the 500 block of East Lee Drive, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff‘s Information Bureau.
County firefighters took the unidentified man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, sheriff’s Deputy Jeffrey Gordon said.
Azusa police officers responded to the location at 12:52 p.m. to investigate a report of an injured man acting bizarrely, Gordon said.
“The call was updated indicating the suspect was breaking into a residence in the neighborhood,” Gordon said.
Once on scene, the officers were told by a neighbor that a female was heard screaming inside a residence, Gordon said.
“The officers gained entry into the residence and located the suspect,” he said. “At that time an officer involved shooting occurred.”
The suspect was a resident of Azusa, Gordon said.
Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives were dispatched to assist Azusa police investigating the shooting.
Neighborhood resident Jesse Zarate, 76, told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that he saw a police officer confront a bloodied man in the front yard of a home, order him to stop and then fire three shots at the suspect after he shouted “shoot me” and ran toward neighboring homes.
