A 29-year-old man, described by police as a “local transient,” remains jailed Sunday for suspicion of attempted murder, robbery and resisting arrest for reportedly shooting a man and pistol whipping another in Whittier.
“They’re going to be other charges, but those are the main ones,” said Whittier police Lt. Bryan Ellis.
Daniel Machado was held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
The victim was walking in an alley in the 6300 block of Whittier Avenue when he was allegedly confronted by Machado, who lifted his shirt and exposed a firearm in his waistband, according to a report from the Whittier Police Department.
The victim then ran and Machado reportedly gave chase, pinning the victim between two parked cars. The victim was then shot once in the lower abdomen.
Machado fled on foot and paramedics rushed the victim to an area hospital where his condition was not immediately known, according to the news statement.
Police were dispatched to the shooting at 1 a.m. Saturday.
Two hours later, at about 3 a.m., police received a call regarding a robbery that had occurred in the 6600 block of Citrus Avenue. Machado reportedly confronted a man at gunpoint, demanding his personal property.
A brief struggle began and during the fight, Machado allegedly pistol whipped the victim and fled on foot with the victim’s property, according to the news statement. Paramedics rushed the victim to an area hospital.
And about 30 minutes later, police received several calls from some residents in the 12500 block of Pasadena Avenue where they reported seeing Machado going door to door demanding help and carrying a handgun, according to the police.
Responding officers set up a containment and began a yard to yard search. With the help of a canine unit Machado was found hiding under a nearby home. He was arrested, and a handgun was recovered, police said.
