Excessive speed caused a 34-year-old woman in San Pedro to lose control of her car, strike a wall on the Gaffey Street onramp to the Harbor (110) Freeway and overturn, the California Highway Patrol said today.

The crash at the beginning of the northbound freeway was at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday, according to a CHP news statement.

The motorist, a resident of Torrance, had been speeding north out of San Pedro on Gaffey Street in a 2012 Ford Fusion. She apparently failed to make a turn onto the onramp and struck the center media wall, according to the CHP.

The sedan overturned and struck a concrete curb as well as an electrical box on the right shoulder. The had not been wearing her seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, said CHP Officer Tony Polizzi.
