A 7-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl were killed, and another person suffered critical injuries when a sport utility vehicle they were in drove off the side of a road in the San Gabriel Canyon and fell about 40 feet, authorities said Sunday.
The crash was reported at 7:34 p.m. Saturday at San Gabriel Canyon Road and Mountain Laurel Way in Azusa, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Brian Jordan said.
The SUV drove off the roadway approximately a half a mile north of the U.S. Forestry Information Booth, said Azusa police Lt. Paul Dennis.
“When officers arrived on scene they located a vehicle down the steep ravine,” Dennis said. “The vehicle had come to rest on its roof.” A 32-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman and a 13-year-old were found outside the vehicle suffering from undetermined injuries, he said.
Paramedics rushed at least of the victims to an area hospital with critical injuries, Jordan said.
The 12-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy were found dead outside the SUV, Dennis said.
Their names will be released pending notification of next of kin, said Coroner’s Investigator Betsy Magdaleno.
