A 53-year-old man was stabbed to death trying to rescue his son from two assailants near the Eagle Rock landmark in northeast Los Angeles, not far from the July 4th Rose Bowl fireworks show.

The assault was near Figueroa Street and La Loma Road at about 7:55 p.m. Saturday, and both suspects ran into the night, said Los Angeles police officer James Richter of the Media Relations Section.

Two male suspects fled into the night after the stabbing, but shortly after they were tracked down by police to a nearby location and taken into custody without incident, Richter said.

The suspects have not been named publicly, but they were about 25 and 45 years old, he said.

The age of the victim’s son was not immediately available.
