A possibly mentally ill man who holed up inside his Canoga Park residence for more than seven hours Monday following a dispute with his mother was taken into custody after a SWAT team used gas, police reported.
Police arrived in the 22000 block of Leadwell Street at 11:15 a.m., 45 minutes after the unidentified woman went to a police station seeking help, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Matthew Ludwig.
She said her son wouldn’t take his medication or let her back in her residence, and told police he had access to weapons, according to Ludwig.
Police were unable to make contact with the suspect, and a SWAT team was sent to the scene in the afternoon. The man’s name was not immediately released.
Some evacuations were ordered as a precaution. Police also advised motorists to avoid Leadwell Street between Nita and Farralone avenues and Wyandotte and Valerio streets.
The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken into custody at 6:45 p.m., said LAPD Officer Mike Lopez.
