All lanes of the southbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Commerce were reopened early Wednesday afternoon, following inspections of the roadway for possible damage from a grass and trash fire that broke out in a riverbed on Monday night.
The fire was reported about 11:30 p.m. Monday in the Rio Hondo near Slauson Avenue and was extinguished in about an hour and 15 minutes by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
A SigAlert was issued just before midnight Monday, shutting down both the northbound and southbound sides of the freeway at Slauson Avenue.
Two northbound lanes were reopened about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, and one southbound lane was reopened about four hours later.
The closures were extended so Caltrans engineers could check the integrity of the roadway. All lanes were reopened about 1:30 this afternoon, the California Highway Patrol reported.
