A man was sentenced today to 17 years in prison for breaking into a Covina home and wielding a metal rod against the homeowner.

Jeffrey Benjamin Jimenez, 38, of Covina, was sentenced immediately after pleading no contest to one felony count each of first-degree burglary with a person present and assault with a deadly weapon.

Jimenez kicked in the home’s front door while armed with a metal rod on March 15, 2014. Authorities said he tried to stab the homeowner with the rod, but the man was able to distance himself with a table.

Jimenez smashed windows at the home before leaving, but was arrested later that day by Covina police, who said he was “high on methamphetamine” and “hallucinating.” He has remained behind bars since then.
