The discovery of a “suspicious” device Friday that turned out to be harmless shut down a stretch of busy Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood for several hours and prompted the evacuation of several buildings.

Hours later, a “suspicious briefcase” found in the 500 block of Flower
Street in downtown Los Angeles also was found to be no threat, according to the
LAPD.

The Sheriff’s Arson/Explosives detail was called to the 9000 block of West Sunset Boulevard about 10:30 a.m. Nearby was the famed Roxy Theater.

Deputies evacuated buildings on either side of the location before the device was “rendered safe” by a bomb squad robot and taken for forensic testing, said Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

A search of the area turned up no additional devices, Saldana said.

Sunset Boulevard, which had been closed between Hammond Street and Doheny Drive, was reopened about 2 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Department.
