A motorist, possibly a man, was killed Sunday when he drove his car through a red light in South Los Angeles, rear-ended a tanker truck and was crushed in the wreckage.

The victim’s body was so badly mangled that authorities could say only that it appeared to be that of a man because of the type of clothing worn.

Police were dispatched to the crash at El Segundo Boulevard and South Figueroa Street at 2:47 a.m., according to a sergeant at the Los Angeles Police Department‘s South Traffic Division.

The motorist, driving a compact gray vehicle, was going northbound on Figueroa Street when he drove through the red light and rear ended the tanker truck that was going eastbound on El Segundo Boulevard, she said.

That impact caused the tanker truck to strike another vehicle that was also going eastbound on El Segundo Boulevard.

The driver of the gray compact was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

“It was a male motorist. He or she was crushed,” the police sergeant said. “It appeared to be a man because of the clothing.”

The man driving the tanker truck and another motorist had only complaints of pain, she said. It was not immediately known whether they were transported to an area hospital.
