Firefighters Tuesday extinguished a fire in a fourplex in South Los Angeles and rescued two puppies, authorities said.

The fire — reported about 8:45 a.m. — in the 400 block of East 43rd Place and was extinguished in about 15 minutes, Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Flames damaged units on the first and second floor of the two-story building, Humphrey said. Firefighters found the puppies “in distress” in the second-floor unit, Humphrey said.

The firefighters administered aid to the puppies, which were taken to a veterinary facility for further treatment, Humphrey said.
