Two people were injured in a fire at a South Gate apartment building and one person who had barricaded himself at the location was taken into custody.
Firefighters sent to the 5600 block of Gardendale Street about 3 a.m. Tuesday and noticed the odor of natural gas, and saw a fire on the second floor of the structure, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Chris Reade said.
The firefighters extinguished the flames, and paramedics took two people to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Reade said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, but South Gate Police Department Sgt. Christopher Dahlia said a person who had barricaded at the location was taken into custody.
Dahlia said police were planning on releasing more information Wednesday about what had happened. He said the murky circumstances should be clarified when more details are revealed.
County firefighters had no information available on the cause of the fire or what the damage was.
Police were waiting to see how the two people — one of whom may have been a child — were doing at the hospital.
