A 60-year-old North Hollywood man, who had just been released from a hospital, died Tuesday after leaping from a bridge overpass onto the Golden State (5) Freeway in Burbank, the coroner’s office reported.

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics and transported to a hospital, where he died.

“He had just been discharged from a hospital, but we don’t know what for,” said Ed Winter of the coroner’s office.

The man’s name was withheld pending notification of his family, Winter said.

Burbank police and California Highway Patrol units responded to the southbound 5 Freeway at Alameda Avenue around 6:55 a.m.

The jumper did not hit any vehicles on the freeway and was not struck after he landed in the far right lane, according to Burbank police.

The ensuing police investigation shut down all southbound lanes and one eastbound lane near Magnolia Boulevard, snarling traffic during rush hour through that area. All lanes had reopened by 8:35 a.m., according to the CHP.
