A young man was killed in Granada Hills when the sedan he was driving slammed into the back of a parked big rig and caught fire, authorities said Friday.

The crash in the 1700 block of Rinaldi Street near Andasol Avenue was reported about 8:40 p.m. Thursday, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters quickly put out the blaze and pronounced the man dead at the scene, Humphrey said, adding that he was the sedan’s sole occupant.

There was no one in the big rig, he said.

The coroner will determine if the victim died from the crash, the fire or both, but the man was trapped in the wreckage and was beyond the help of rescuers, Humphrey said.

Rinaldi Street was closed in both directions after the crash, which was being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department‘s Valley Traffic Division.
