A man’s body was found Sunday morning by firefighters battling a detached garage fire at a Van Nuys home.

A neighbor suffered a minor injury and smoke inhalation trying to rescue the victim at 14243 Victory Blvd., said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters dispatched to the scene at 4:35 a.m. had the fire out within 13 minutes of their arrival, Humphrey said.

A television reporter said the dwelling was a converted garage without electrical service, where candles had been used for light. The victim was a man in his 50s, neighbors said.
