A carjacking suspect who barricaded himself in a South Gate home Monday morning was taken into custody hours later by a sheriff’s SWAT team and South Gate officers, according to the sheriff’s department.

Residents evacuated during the standoff will be allowed to return home starting at 4 p.m., according to South Gate police.

The confrontation in the 10600 block of Capistrano Avenue began about 10:20 a.m.

A Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau team was sent to the location “to assist South Gate Police Department personnel regarding an armed carjacking suspect barricaded inside a residence,” said Deputy Juanita Navarro- Suarez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Surrounding homes were evacuated for the safety of the residents, Navarro-Suarez said.

Some shots may have been fired early in the incident, according to reports from the scene.

As of mid-afternoon, the suspect was in custody and there were no reports of injuries.
