Long Beach police asked for the public’s help Wednesday in finding a man accused of sneaking into a Long Beach backyard and stealing five exotic birds.

Three suspects were caught on video surveillance May 4 committing the theft in the 6700 block of Harbor Avenue, police said. One climbed over a backyard fence, opened cages and handed birds back over the fence to another man.

Police allege that Jose Jesus Zermeno was the man climbing the fence. He’s described as a 42-year-old Hispanic man about 5 foot 3 inches tall, with a medium build.

A second suspect, 31-year-old Gerardo Jose Victoria of Long Beach, was arrested June 1. He pleaded not guilty to grand theft and is awaiting trial.

The unidentified getaway driver, who drove a red Ford Ranger truck, also remains at large.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Zermeno or the getaway driver was asked to call the Long Beach Police Department’s burglary detail at (562) 570-7351 or (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
