A man suspected in the hit-and-run death of a Bell High School student who was struck while skateboarding surrendered Wednesday to police.
Charles Garcia, 37, was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run in the Aug. 29 collision that killed 17-year-old Joshua Maldonado, Bell police reported.
Garcia was being held in lieu of $260,000 bail.
Police said Garcia owns a 2002 silver Mitsubishi Galant that matched the description of the vehicle that struck the teen near Gage and Bear avenues. The youth was pronounced dead at the scene.
Friends and relatives described Joshua as an upbeat teen who was always in good humor and had a passion for taking photos.
“He would ride around on his skateboard around the city, around Los Angeles, you know, just taking pictures,” his brother Christian said last month. “It was something he really enjoyed. He would post them on his Instagram and he would always receive good feedback. And yeah, people always respected Josh. He made people smile.”
