Detectives were sent to the 3200 block of West Avenue J-10 about 6:50 a.m. and found both the man and the woman lying in the driveway of what they later learned was the woman’s home, according to the sheriff’s department.
The gun was recovered at the scene.
A witness told investigators the man, a Lancaster resident, approached the woman and after the two began arguing he pointed a gun at the victim and fired several shots at her before shooting himself, officials said.
A sheriff’s detective told reporters at the scene the woman had filed for divorce and that it might have been finalized on Wednesday.
The victim was a school nurse and the mother of three college-aged sons, two of them students at UCLA and the third headed to San Diego State University, according to ABC7.
