Authorities Tuesday identified a man who was fatally shot in what police said was a targeted attack in Montebello.
The shooting occurred in the 1600 block of Neil Armstrong Street at 6:30 p.m. Monday, said Montebello police Lt. Andy Vuncanon said. Brian Gomez, 28, of Lynwood died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
The victim was found on a sidewalk, Vuncanon said.
“We believe it was not a random act,” Vuncanon said, without specifying why investigators think the victim was targeted.
A six-hour search for the suspect amid a lockdown of the neighborhood was unsuccessful, Vuncanon said. Montebello police officers were assisted in the search by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies.
Sgt. J. Tonce of the sheriff’s Temple Station said the murder weapon was an assault rifle.
The suspect was described as being in his early 20s, between 5 feet 5 and 5 feet 8, of medium build and wearing dark clothing.
Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to contact the lead investigator, Montebello police Detective Reuben Zabala, at (323) 887-1313, ext. 254.
