A 67-year-old motorist was killed when his Mercedes Benz sedan rearended an SUV on the Chino Valley (71) Freeway in Pomona, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.

The motorist was later identified as Mark Hoffman, of the Lake View Terrace area of Los Angeles, according to a crash report from the CHP, which added that Hoffman’s next of kin had been notified of his death.

A 7-year-old boy suffered major injuries at the crash.

The crash was reported to the CHP at 3:25 p.m. Saturday on the northbound Chino Valley (71) Freeway just south Rio Ranch Road. Hoffman, driving a 1998 Mercedes-Benz E20, failed to see that a 2014 BMW X5 was stopped for traffic and rear ended the SUV. The impact caused the SUV to then strike a 2015 Nissan Sentra.

Hoffman, the only person in his car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 7-year-old boy, a passenger in the BMW, was rushed to an area hospital with major injuries. Two other occupants suffered minor injuries and were also taken to a hospital.
