A gunman suspected of firing shots in a Highland Park neighborhood holed up inside a building Friday afternoon, prompting the lockdown of a nearby middle school before he surrendered to police, authorities said.

Officers spotted and pursued the suspect after responding about 2:15 p.m. to a shots fired call in the 6100 block of Meridian Avenue, said Los Angeles police Officer Jack Richter.
The man ran into a building and refused to come out, so officers set up a perimeter and ordered the lockdown of Luther Burbank Middle School at 6460 N. Figueroa St., Richter said.
The suspect surrendered about 3:30 p.m., he said.
The school lockdown was lifted shortly thereafter, said Monica Carazo of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
