A man arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and sexual assault made an unsuccessful suicide attempt in a Los Angeles Police Department station holding cell, police said Thursday.
The 38-year-old suspect attempted to strangle himself with a shoelace around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, said LAPD Sgt. Gregory Probst, the watch commander at the LAPD Pacific Division. He said officers intervened to thwart the effort.
The suspect was arrested only a few hours earlier, Probst said.
Although the holding cell was monitored by video, officers initially did not recognize what was happening because the suspect had his collar turned up, he said..
The suspect was hospitalized in stable condition Thursday, Probst said.
