A man was killed Friday when his car rolled over on the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway, ejecting him onto a freeway sign, authorities said.
The crash happened about 7 a.m., near Colorado Boulevard and the 5’s interchange with the Ventura (134) Freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.
The name of the victim — who was in his 20s — was withheld, pending notification of kin.
The man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected when the car collided with another car and as the vehicle rolled over, the momentum flung the man 20 to 30 feet in the air onto the walkway of the freeway sign designating Colorado Boulevard.
Authorities covered the body, and it remained there for about three hours. At about 10 a.m., the freeway was closed for around 20 minutes in both directions while firefighters lowered the body from the sign.
“The dynamics of a vehicle collision, especially at high speeds — and including not wearing a seatbelt — anything like that can happen,” CHP Officer Edgar Figueroa said. “Driving at a high rate of speed, not wearing (a) seatbelt, and rolling over … people get ejected out of cars like that.”
