A 54-year-old man was shot to death in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles Halloween night, police and the coroner said.

The shooting victim was identified as a Venice resident, Orrin Michael Halper, according to Investigator Betsy Magdaleno of the coroner’s office.

The shooting was reported at 10:47 a.m. Saturday in the 6300 block of Purdue Avenue, police said. That location is one block north of Venice Boulevard and two blocks west of Sawtelle Boulevard.

Arriving officers found Halper suffering from a gunshot wound. Firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene.

Officers took a suspect into custody, and while the investigation was still ongoing, police said the shooting may have been the result of a dispute.
