Fire officials Friday were trying to determine what caused a house fire in El Monte that killed one “elderly” person and critically injured a woman.

A 55-year-old man escaped the blaze in the 12300 block of Felipe Street unharmed, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Kyle Sandford said.

The woman was rescued Thursday night during an initial search of the house, and the victim was found during a secondary search, Supervisor Ed Pickett said.

No identification was available for the victim, Sanford said.

The rescued woman’s age was not available.

“They just said elderly, but they didn’t have an age,” Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Nellis said.

The fire was reported at 10:04 p.m. and knocked down at 10:27 p.m., Pickett said.
