Firefighters needed 24 minutes to knock down a vegetation fire Friday that burned about a quarter-acre of grass and spread to the roofs of a vacant home and garage in Van Nuys.

The fire began in the brush around a home in the 6460 block of Langdon Ave. just before 1:30 p.m., fire department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

The flames then spread to the wood shingle roof on the home and the roof of a detached garage, Humphrey said.

The department dispatched 40 firefighters to the scene to fight the wind- driven blaze, a dangerous condition in light of Friday’s Red Flag warning, Humphrey added.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
