Several people were injured Sunday, including both drivers, when a van/tour bus slammed into a CalTrans lane restriping vehicle on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in El Monte, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash took place about 10:50 a.m. on the westbound 10 Freeway, just east of Durfee Avenue, according to the CHP Officer D. Parsons.
According to the CHP accident report, Xu Zhang, 31, of San Gabriel was driving 2014 van/tour bus west in the carpool lane at an unsafe speed because the carpool lane was being restriped at the time. There was a moving lane closure with warning lights on and a number of CalTrans vehicle and CHP cars participating in the closure, Parsons stated.
Zhang’s tour bus the rear-ended a CalTrans vehicle driven by 50-year-old James Allen Thompson of West Covina. The resulting collision left Zhang with cuts to his hands and complaining of pain. Thompson also complained of pain after the crash. And several of the passengers in Zhang’s tour bus suffered minor injuries, according to Parsons.
The collision shut down the carpool lane and Number 1 lane until 2:30 p.m., according to Parsons. Alcohol and drugs did not play any role in this crash, he said.
Anyone with information on this crash was asked to call Parsons at the East L.A. CHP office at (323) 980-4600.
