A passenger with a handgun emerged from a car that had been stopped for a routine traffic violation in Pomona, failed to drop it and was shot by police, officers said Sunday.
The suspect was shot once in the torso, and rushed to a hospital in serious condition, said Deputy Lillian Peck of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. No officers were injured.
The suspect was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by a Pomona police officer about 1:29 a.m. in the 800 block of South Buena Vista Avenue, Peck said.
He got out of the vehicle, holding a handgun, and did not comply with the officer’s orders. A handgun was recovered at the scene, she said.
The sheriff’s department is investigating the case at the request of Pomona police.
