An off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy riding a motorcycle was hurt while trying to avoid hitting a coyote in the road, authorities said Tuesday.

The accident happened on Wiley Canyon Road near Canerwell Street close to the sheriff’s Santa Clarita Station at 11:30 p.m. Monday, said sheriff’s Lt. Derek Sabatini.

“He was leaving work on his department motorcycle,” Sabatini said. “A coyote ran in front of him. He avoided the coyote but put down his bike.”

The deputy was taken to a hospital complaining of pain, the lieutenant said.
