A man went to the El Monte Police station Tuesday and said he had a bomb in his backpack, prompting some evacuations in the area until explosives experts determined that his claim was false.

The man, in his 50s, went to the station at 11333 Valley Blvd. about 6:45 a.m. “and notified our dispatch center that he was in possession of a bomb,” according to a police statement.

The man was detained, and officers established a perimeter of 300 yards around the backpack, resulting in the closure of El Monte City Hall and a section of Valley Boulevard.

About 8 a.m., a bomb squad determined that no explosive or dangerous material was inside the backpack, and the closures of City Hall and Valley Boulevard were lifted.

Police said they were in the process of identifying the man who was detained.
