A man was killed Tuesday morning when he was struck by a 2002 Ford Explorer on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Boyle Heights, authorities said.

The man was hit on the northbound Golden State Freeway just north of State Street at 12:52 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos.

Alma Esquiver, 36, of Los Angeles told the CHP she saw the man walking northbound in traffic lanes in front of her vehicle but was unable to avoid hitting him in the No. 3 lane.

Investigators were trying this morning to determine why the man was walking on the freeway, the CHP said.

The CHP shut down the No. 2, 3 and 4 lanes of the Golden State Freeway and the State Street onramp between 1:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. for its investigation, Villalobos said.
