One man was killed and three other people were critically injured in a two-vehicle collision in Boyle Heights, authorities said Thursday.

The crash at the intersection of East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue and North Mission Road occurred about 10:05 p.m. Wednesday, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey and Sgt. Mike Flynn of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Division.

One man died inside his car at the scene, Humphrey said, and three other people were transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Flynn said the man who died was “traveling south on North Mission Road at a high rate of speed. He then made a left-hand turn in front of another driver who was heading north on Mission.” The force of the crash sent the second car sliding across the road, he said.

“Meanwhile, the driver who died slammed into a telephone pole and then was partially ejected from his car,” Flynn said. “The telephone pole also took off part of the man’s head and the pole ended up partially inside his car.”

The dead driver’s name was withheld pending family notification.

“Officers who returned from the scene said it was one of the worst crashes they had ever seen,” Flynn said.

Police did not immediately determine if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
