A masked man who allegedly tried to rob two undercover sheriff’s deputies using a BB gun was shot and wounded but survived, the sheriff’s department reported.
The deputy-involved-shooting took place in the 1100 block of Avenue H14 in Lancaster about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to sheriff’s Lt. Victor Lewandowski.
The suspect, who was wearing a makeshift mask, knocked on the front driver-side window with the BB gun, Lewandowski told reporters at the scene. The Operation Safe Street deputies, fearing for their lives, shot the suspect through the car window, he said.
Lewandowski said the suspect, though wounded several times, managed to run about a block from the shooting. He collapsed in a yard in the 45000 block of Kingtree Avenue, where he was found by deputies. He was then transported to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. His condition was not immediately reported.
Sheriff’s deputies then set up a perimeter around the scene, which was still active as of midnight. Lewandowski said deputies were searching for any accomplices who may be in the area.
The suspect’s name was not immediately released.
