An Arcadia man who led police on a chase in June 2014 that ended with a crash in Temple City that killed his passenger pleaded no contest Friday to gross vehicular manslaughter and evading an officer.

Richard John Villareal Jr., 30, was immediately sentenced to 15 years and eight months in state prison after his plea to the two felony charges.

The case stemmed from the death of Michael Sandoval Jr., 38, of Arcadia, who was killed in the June 2 crash.

Villareal led Arcadia police officers on a high-speed pursuit after they tried to pull him over near Workman and Baldwin avenues, authorities said.

Villareal’s vehicle went through a red light at the intersection of Lower Azusa Road and Arden Drive and was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Arden Drive, authorities said.

Villareal suffered minor injuries. The other motorist was not injured, police said.

Villareal has remained behind bars since then.
