A man who was believed to be driving a stolen vehicle was shot and killed by police on Sixth Street in Boyle Heights, police said Sunday.

The coroner’s office Sunday identified the stolen vehicle suspect shot dead by police in Boyle Heights as 16-year-old Jose Mendez.

He was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle when he was shot about 10:45 p.m. on Sixth Street, according to Los Angeles police.

Officers were following a reported stolen vehicle on Sixth Street, west of Lorena Street, according to Officer Rosario Herrera of the LAPD’s Media Relations Section.

The suspect stopped the vehicle in the 3300 block of East Sixth Street, said Herrera. “The suspect was armed and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

“The suspect was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene,” she said. No officers were injured.

No city of residence was available for Mendez.
