A 29-year-old man was shot and killed in a deputy-involved shooting Sunday in East Los Angeles, where a .22 caliber revolver was recovered and two people were detained.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop just after 4 a.m. near the intersection of Ferris Avenue and Whittier Boulevard to investigate a possible stolen vehicle. That location is on the main commercial street of East Los Angeles, about midway between Arizona and Atlantic avenues.

They encountered a combative right-front seat passenger, said Deputy Crystal Hernandez of the Sheriff’s Department.

A struggle began and the deputies became aware that the suspect was armed and attempting to retrieve his gun, Hernandez said. Deputies gave several commands for the suspect to comply with their orders, however he continued to struggle and a deputy-involved shooting occurred, Hernandez said.

The 29-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, no deputies were injured, she said. A .22 caliber revolver was recovered at the scene and two additional persons in the vehicle were detained.
