Authorities Friday identified a man who was fatally struck by a vehicle as he tried to cross a street in West Covina underneath the San Bernardino (10) Freeway.
The accident took place around 10:40 p.m. Thursday at Citrus Avenue where it intersects with the underpass below the 10 Freeway, said West Covina police Lt. Travis Tibbetts.
John Paredes, 52, of West Covina died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
“It looks like the man was trying to cross the street illegally, but we have detectives out at the scene to investigate the exact details,” Tibbetts said this morning.
The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, Tibbetts said.
“There was no crime involved. It was just an accident,” Tibbetts said.
The California Highway Patrol shut down the Citrus Avenue offramp from the westbound 10 Freeway at the request of West Covina police so a death investigation could be carried out, CHP Officer Patrick Kimball said.
A SigAlert was declared by the CHP at 12:08 a.m., Kimball said. The offramp was reopened at 1:52 a.m. and the SigAlert was cancelled, according to the CHP.
