A man who was arrested in Bellflower on suspicion of driving drunk died Thursday in his cell at the sheriff’s Lakewood Station jail, authorities said.

The man, who was in his 50s, was found unresponsive by a jailer about 6:30 a.m. in his single-man cell at the facility in the 5100 block of North Clark Avenue, where he had been held since Wednesday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s department.

Deputies were alerted and immediately began CPR until Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived and took over life-saving measures, according to the sheriff’s department.

“Unfortunately, the inmate did not respond and was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:48 a.m. There was no obvious signs of physical trauma to the inmate,” according to a sheriff’s statement.

The cause of his death will have to be determined by the coroner’s office.
