Authorities continued their investigation Friday into how a man arrested in Bellflower on suspicion of driving drunk died in his cell at the sheriff’s Lakewood Station jail.
The exact cause of death will be determined by an autopsy by the coroner’s office.
The man, who was in his 50s, was found unresponsive by a jailer about 6:30 a.m. Thursday in his single-man cell at the facility in the 5100 block of North Clark Avenue, where he had been held since Wednesday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s department.
Deputies were alerted and immediately began CPR until Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived and took over life-saving measures, according to the sheriff’s department.
“Unfortunately, the inmate did not respond and was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:48 a.m. There was no obvious signs of physical trauma to the inmate,” according to a sheriff’s statement. The man’s name was withheld pending family notification.
