A firefighter suffered a minor leg injury battling a blaze that collapsed the roof of a one-story commercial building in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The fire was reported just after 6 p.m. Thursday in the 6600 block of South Eighth Avenue in South Los Angeles, Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The blaze sent up a plume of smoke that was visible for miles.

The metal-clad building housed a furniture store, according to a report from the scene.

The fire took down high voltage lines, complicating the efforts of more than 55 firefighters, including units from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, who responded and knocked down the flames in 48 minutes, Stewart said.

Two houses on either side of the building were threatened, but firefighters kept them from catching fire, she said.

Some crews remained at the scene after knockdown, dousing hot spots and conducting overhaul operations, Stewart said.
