A 40-year-old man on a bicycle was run over and killed by a transit bus while he riding in a carpool lane on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Alhambra.

The crash occurred about 4:30 a.m. on the eastbound freeway. west of Garfield Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported.

“This collision occurred during the hours of darkness,” according to a CHP report.

The bicyclist was going east in the carpool lane, approaching Garfield Avenue, when the transit bus ran over him from behind. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is not legal to ride a bicycle on most freeways, and the speed limit there is 65 miles per hour. The bicyclist was not immediately identified by the coroner.

The CHP’s East Los Angeles office asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (323) 980-4600.
