A bear cub on the loose in a residential neighborhood drew curious onlookers in Duarte Sunday before a game warden shot it with a tranquilizer dart.

The bear was reported to be in the 1400 block of Royal Oaks Drive about 3 p.m. and deputies from the sheriff’s Duarte Station spotted it about 20 minutes later, according to the station watch commander.

The bear climbed a tree but apparently became spooked and took off running.

Game wardens from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife responded, darted the bear and took it away in a pickup truck.

The animal would be relocated to a “safe habitat,” said Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesman Andrew Hughan.

Curious onlookers appeared to ignore broadcast warnings to stay away as the bear moved through the residential area.
