Two hikers who called authorities to report they were lost in the San Gabriel Mountains were found by rescuers Sunday.

Rescuers reached the 35-year-old woman and 51-year-old diabetic man on Rattlesnake Peak near East Fork and Shoemaker roads at 4:25 a.m., said  Lt. T. Reid of the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station.

The station was contacted at 7:55 p.m. Sunday by one of the hikers on a cellphone who said they were lost,  Reid said. The sheriff’s department then lost reception and was unable to use the cellphone to locate them.

Searchers from Los Angeles County Search and Rescue and the Los Angeles County Fire Department searched for the hikers on foot, he said. Clouds rendered the ceiling too low to deploy a helicopter.

The searchers “had to crawl through the brush” to reach the hikers, Reid said. They brought food and medical supplies and found the hikers in good condition.

Everyone will walk out of the area at daylight or get an airship to pick them up, depending on cloud cover, he said.
