Authorities responding to a medical emergency call at a commercial building in Pomona found a man dead and more than 2,000 marijuana plants in various stages of growth, police announced Tuesday.

On Monday night, the Pomona Police dispatch office received a call from a 54-year-old man who was in the midst of a medical emergency.

“The victim explained to the dispatcher that he was having trouble breathing, but did not know his address,” according to a Pomona Police Department statement said. “The victim’s conditioned worsened and he was unable to further communicate with dispatchers over the phone.”

Officers tracked down the man’s location through cell phone towers and GPS coordinates and went there, but he had already died. The cause of his death was not immediately known, and his name was withheld pending family notification.

While inside the building, the officers “discovered a handgun near the victim, an overwhelming odor of marijuana, and a large-scale marijuana grow being cultivated inside of the building,” according to police.

Officers obtained a warrant and searched the building, where they discovered “an elaborate marijuana grow in five rooms of the building which included wooden structures to support the cultivation, numerous gallons of fertilizer grow mix, carbon dioxide tanks (and) special lighting and irrigation systems in each of the five rooms,” police said.
