The Coroner’s Office Sunday released the name of the homeless dead gang member who wounded a police officer in a wild shootout in Boyle Heights.
The dead man who was apparently killed by officers returning fire was identified as Robert Mark Diaz, 28, according to Investigator Anthony Lopez of the coroner’s office.
Even though officials believed Diaz was a gang member, Lopez said that Diaz was homeless.
The shootout took place at 8:30 p.m. Friday, in the 3400 block of Lee Street, near the intersection of 7th and Lorena streets, according to LAPD Officer Rosario Herrera and media reports.
Herrera confirmed that an officer was wounded but did not have any information regarding his condition.
There is no word yet on what led up to the confrontation between the LAPD officers and Diaz.
An LAPD desk officer told City News Service a Hollenbeck Division gang officer was shot and rushed to County-USC Medical Center.
A second officer was also injured, according to CBS2. There’s no word regarding how that second officer was injured or his current condition.
The shooting was being investigated by the LAPD’s Use of Force Division, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Justice System Investigation Division Shooting Team and the Los Angeles Police Commission’s Inspector General’s Office.
The wounded officer remained in the hospital.
