A tip generated by news coverage led to the identification of a person of interest thought to have been driving around the same time and in the same area of Palos Verdes Estates that a 68-year-old man on a bicycle was involved in a fatal crash.

The victim, identified as John William Bacon III of Torrance, was struck about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of Granvia Altamira, according to the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department.

Officers found him unconscious in the road, near his dark-colored Specialized road bike, suffering from an apparent head injury, police said.

Bacon, who had been wearing a helmet, was taken in critical condition to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where he died the same day.

A press release issued Thursday depicting a white pickup truck being driven behind the victim prior to the crash generated many calls, including one that led detectives to locate the pickup and identify its driver, police said.

He was interviewed and is cooperating with police as the investigation into the case continues.

“The name of the driver is not being released at this time to maintain the integrity of the overall investigation; he remains a person of interest,” according to a police statement Friday.

Anyone with information about the crash was urged to call the Palos Verdes Estates police detective sergeant handling the case at (310) 378-4211.
