A 54-year-old woman was critically injured when she was struck multiple times by a hammer while she was sleeping in bed in East Los Angeles early Wednesday and her 27-year-old son was arrested.
The attack woke up others in the home who attempted to restrain Gustavo Gonzalez, said Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
The attack was reported at about 2:35 a.m. as a “family disturbance,” Navarro-Suarez said.

When deputies entered the home in the 3700 block of Whiteside Street, about a block north of the San Bernardino (10) Freeway, they got into a “physical confrontation” with Gonzalez, Navarro-Suarez said.
Some deputies suffered minor injuries, before subduing Gonzalez and taking him into custody, Navarro-Suarez said.
Gonzalez was taken to a hospital for treatment, Navarro-Suarez said.
Gonzalez was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem, Navarro-Suarez said. He is expected to be booked at the Inmate Reception Center.
The woman, whose name was not released, remains hospitalized in critical condition, Navarro-Suarez said.
