A man was fatally shot while sitting in a vehicle with a friend in East Los Angeles, authorities said Friday.
It happened about 11 p.m. Thursday in the 4100 block of City Terrace Drive, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The wounded man, in his 20s, died at a hospital. His name was withheld, pending notification of kin.
Deputies originally went to the neighborhood on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 4200 block of Woolwine Drive, about a block south of the City Terrace location, but they did not find a victim or witnesses.
“They did, however, discover evidence that a shooting occurred,” a sheriff’s statement said. “While deputies were conducting their investigation they received information from East Los Angeles Station dispatch personnel informing them that a local hospital reported a gunshot victim who was transported to their hospital by a male friend.”
Deputies went to the hospital, and the male told them that he and the victim were sitting in a vehicle parked in front of a business in the 4100 block of City Terrace Drive when “a suspect approached them from across the street and fired one round at the victim, who was sitting in the front passenger side of the vehicle, striking him in the upper torso,” the statement said.
The victim’s friend then drove the mortally wounded man to the hospital.
“Homicide detectives have determined that the shooting that occurred on the 4200 block of Woolwine Drive and the shooting on the 4100 block of City Terrace were not related,” the statement said. “Both investigations are ongoing.”
