Is there a hungry great white shark prowling the waters around Catalina Island?

Warnings are up around the island’s diving area Sunday after a great white shark was spotted, authorities said.

Three people reported seeing the 12- to 15-foot shark at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday near the Outskirt Dive Bar, said Los Angeles County firefighter Gustavo Medina.

“No one was injured or attacked,” Medina said.

Warnings were posted in the area but it was not shut down for scuba diving, he said.

A great white shark was the featured human-devouring villain in the all-time scary film “Jaws” in the 1970s, so the appearance of one of the fearsome monsters close to shore was concerning.

This shark scare came within a couple weeks of a shark attack on a woman in the water off Orange County the day before Memorial Day, and subsequent sightings and ocean closures of sharks in the same Orange County areas.
